Fay L. Bower has a long and varied career in nursing. She has been a neonatal critical care nurse, a public health nurse, and a school nurse, all before she devoted over 40 years to nursing education. As an academic, she has held positions as a professor, chairwoman, dean, vice president and president of a college in Omaha, Neb. After three retirements, she is again active as chairwoman of the department of nursing at Holy Names University in Oakland California. Bower has written extensively, conducted much research and served as a leader in many state and national organizations and as president of the second largest international organization in nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. She also introduced the nursing process in 1972 in her book entitled The Process of Nursing Care, which has been through three editions.
