Greg Mortenson is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace and co-author of New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea, which has been a number one New York Times bestseller since its January 2007 release, and was Time Magazine Asia Book of The Year. As of October 2008, Three Cups of Tea, has sold more than 2 million copies.

In 2009, Pakistan’s government awarded Mortenson Pakistan’s highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan (“Star of Pakistan”) for his courage and humanitarian efforts to promote education and literacy in rural areas for the past 15 years.
