Ms. Downing was born in Australia and moved to Canada with her family when she was 16. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, a  Bachelor of Arts in psychology degree, and a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Queen's University in Canada. Clinically, her areas of nursing have been long-term care, complex continuing care, orthopedics, telephonic nursing, and education. Ms. Downing has worked as a nurse in both Canada and the United States, and she had a nursing placement in her hometown in Australia. She is currently the assistant dean of nursing at the University of Phoenix and oversees curriculum. Outside of her work she is developing a project to create a world-class health care system in Nigeria and is enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing program.
