Xi Chapter #013
Dr. Sommers is the Lillian Brunner Professor of Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and the director of the Center for Global Women’s Health. Dr. Sommers has received six R01 research grant awards as principal or co-principal investigator from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies with funding exceeding US $18 million, and she has published more than 100 scholarly articles. Her long-term objectives are to reduce the burden of injury and develop and test interventions that are effective in preventing and managing trauma. Dr. Sommers’ populations of interest (women, older adolescents, and young adults) often live in poverty, have health care-access inequities, and bear a larger burden of injury and violence than other populations. Government agencies use her definitive work in developing and testing techniques to reduce disparities in the sexual assault forensic examination to foster equity after rape, particularly for women with dark skin.
