Dr. Meier has focused her nursing career on the study and practice of human milk, lactation, and breastfeeding for premature infants and their mothers. She has conducted 18 funded studies, had published more than 85 peer-reviewed studies and book chapters, and mentored students from multiple scientific disciplines on this topic. She currently serves as president of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation and is a member of the Health Advisory Board for La Leche League, International. Dr. Meier has counseled professional groups (e.g., neonatologists, nurses, dietitians) and lay organizations (La Leche League, Nursing Mothers' Council, Association Relais Parentalite Allaitement, Breastfeeding Friends) in countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Peru, New Zealand, and Australia about the scientific basis and clinical techniques for using human milk in premature infants. Dr. Meier has received special recognition from the Chinese Nursing Association for furthering breastfeeding science and practice.
