This project describes the approach taken with and outcomes derived from the development and implementation of a nurse-driven Foley removal protocol. The nurse-driven Foley removal protocol was a collaborative effort with nursing, physicians, and clinical information systems to expedite Foley catheter removal to avoid catheter-acquired urinary tract infections.
The nurse-driven Foley protocol demonstrated a significant reduction in catheter-associated urinary tract infections and catheter utilization (p value <.0001 with a 95% confidence interval). Team members who worked on this important project have demonstrated commitment to promoting quality in health care and to the patients they serve.
