The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene (SONDH) is the premier nursing program and the only doctoral/research university-intensive institution in the State of Hawai‘i. The School provides instructional, clinical, and research activities to enhance the health and care of diverse populations in the State of Hawai‘i and the Asia-Pacific region. SONDH is located on the flagship campus for the UH system in beautiful Mānoa Valley on the island of Oahu.
The school’s vision is to be the leader in nursing in Hawai‘i with outreach to Asia and the Pacific Basin focusing on research that advances the health of diverse populations in our region. The school is home to the Nursing Science Center for Ohana and Self Management (NINR P20) focusing on culturally-sensitive, community based self-management interventions for chronic illnesses. Current faculty research funding totals $4.3 million with the expectation of continued growth and development. Specific research emphasis is on health promotion and disease prevention throughout the life cycle, health disparities/inequities, community health including disaster preparedness, chronic illness.
With an emphasis in academic quality, SONDH offers bachelor’s degree in nursing; a master’s entry program in nursing pathway; master’s degree and post master’s certificate with specialization including nurse practitioner, education, administration and community public health; and a PhD in nursing. The On-line PhD and graduate nursing programs provide students access to advanced education while residing in their home communities across the State, including rural areas and the neighbor islands. SONDH has 74 faculty who are supported by a team of administrative, professional and technical staff, and lecturers; and enrolls 390 undergraduate students, 110 master and post-master’s nursing students, and 38 PhD in nursing students.
The ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH is responsible for research development, administration and external relations thereby creating an environment in which excellence in research enhances the mission of the school, campus and university. The Associate Dean will facilitate the research agenda of the school focusing on knowledge generating and practice relevant research. The position reports to the Dean of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene and is a member of the senior management team.
Minimum qualifications: Doctorate in nursing or related field; record of effective teaching and scholarly achievement commensurate with professor rank; attainment to Rank 4 (associate professor) or comparable professional experience prior to appointment; progressive experience in administration in a research unit of an academic program; scholarly accomplishments in nursing or health sciences; funded research and publication record; demonstrated commitment to creating a climate of research excellence, mentoring and scholarly achievements; demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity in working with multi-cultural populations; and ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituencies. Desirable qualifications: Researcher with experience in developing and implementing a strategic plan for strengthening and coordinating an academic research program; three or more years experience as a research director of similar line responsibilities in an academic organization; NIH or equivalent funded research, and publication record; eligible for RN license in Hawai‘i; and eligible for APRN recognition.
