July 2007 Spotlight on Beta Mu
Becky Hull, president of Beta Mu chapter which represents the University Of Arizona College Of Nursing in Tucson, knew she wanted to begin offering community service opportunities that all members could get excited about. She chose Habitat for Humanity because of the broad appeal and sense of teamwork and accomplishment that is created among its volunteer “building teams.”
Nine Beta Mu chapter members arrived at the
Habitat building site in Tucson the morning of 15 May and were immediately put to work painting the interior of a three-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse. According to Hull, it didn’t take long for a group of nurses to figure out how to divide the work into do-able pieces and then get to it in a single day. She believes that while nurses give to patients and families all the time, this experience with Habitat was a chance for members to improve the overall health of the community by helping to provide affordable housing to a deserving family.
Involve your Chapter with Habitat for Humanity:
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and invites people of all backgrounds, races, and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Habitat has built more than 225,000 houses around the world, including over 1,000 in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast. These simple, decent houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans.
Involvement with Habitat starts at the affiliate (local) level. If you would like more information about how your members can participate as a building team, go to http://www.habitat.org and do a local affiliate search to find out about events and news in your area.
