Name and Credentials: Connie Sobon Sensor, PhD(c), RN, CTN-A
Candidate Statement
I have the qualifications and leadership experience necessary to ensure that I will be an excellent Secretary for STTI. I have certified expertise in Critical Care, School Health and Transcultural Nursing. I work as a School Nurse in a large, culturally diverse public school and teach nursing at Kean University in Union, N.J.
I am a PhD candidate at Seton Hall University with a research focus on global health and the power of culturally responsive nursing. I earned an MSN from Kean University; a BSN from New Jersey City University, and a diploma in nursing from the Englewood Hospital School of Nursing.
I have leadership experience at the international, regional and chapter levels of STTI. Internationally, I serve as a member of the United Nations Task Force and Advisory Council, the Membership Ambassador Task Force, and as a judge for the Founder’s Awards and Chapter Key Awards. I have presented on Chapter Programming, Leadership, and Culturally Responsive Nursing at Leadership Academy, Leadership Summit, and at Biennium. I served two terms as Region 14 Coordinator, where I organized regional conferences on Writing for Publication, Genomic Competencies in Nursing, and the Role of STTI and Nurses in Promoting and Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. I facilitated development and growth of an ongoing regional Service Leadership Project in partnership with the Foundation for Peace, preparing and sending nurses and students to promote health in rural areas of the Dominican Republic. I served seven years as Coordinator of the NJ Consortium of STTI Chapters, promoting collaborative programming among chapters. At the chapter level, I was President and Treasurer for the Key Award winning Kappa Eta Chapter at New Jersey City University. I also chaired the Bylaws committee, and served on committees for the Newsletter, Membership Recruitment and Retention, and Mentoring.
I have been an active leader in many professional organizations, serving on the National Public Policy Workgroup and as Public Policy Advisor for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses; President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Transcultural Nursing Society; and Secretary for Region 3 of the New Jersey State Nurses Association.
If elected, I envision my role as an ambassador for the organization, and a decision-making member of a dynamic, multicultural team that will lead the future direction of STTI as a global society. This translates to being culturally sensitive in all communication, and respectful of, and open to, the different perspectives brought to the decision-making table for the future of the society. I would like to see further development of STTI programs to support scholarship and research, clinical practice, and education, with attention to the economic and environmental challenges that face our colleagues in different parts of the world. I see this role as an opportunity to bring greater awareness to the power of nursing to improve the health of the world’s people in meeting the mission and goals of the society. I would be honored to have your vote and welcome the opportunity to serve you and STTI as Secretary.
