Candidate for Regional Chapters Coordinating Committee
STTI Global Region: North America
Region 8 Coordinator

Ellen Buckner
Name and Credentials:
Ellen B. Buckner, DSN, RN, CNE

Candidate Statement
It is an honor and a privilege to be nominated for Region 8 Coordinator for the 2011-2013 Biennium! It has been a joy to serve as Region 8 Coordinator—truly a bright spot in my professional career! Continuation would make it possible to sustain and expand the initiatives of the last biennium, specifically the Membership Ambassador Program and the Regional Conference.

My qualifications include more than 35 years of participation in STTI. During my career, I have served as a chapter president and lead numerous activities to increase membership especially connecting with new inductees, retired members and new community nurse leaders. I participate actively in my current chapters and have had the opportunity to visit several other chapters across the region. I have nominated numerous individuals for STTI International Awards, including New Member Pillar of Service Awards and Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. I chair the STTI Membership Ambassador Task Force which is developing the role descriptions for use by other regions.

I have served in the Region 8 role for the last two years. I think it is the most important role for building chapters and connecting chapters to each other directly. My goals for the new biennium are as follows:

  1. Building Community. This includes the global community as well as the “sense of community” within the organization. I would continue to enhance strategies of bringing chapters together through conference calls, Regional conference, the Membership Ambassador Program, and Chapter development from initiation to Chapter Key Award. I have set current goals to engage Regional members and chapters through The Circle, especially to provide a platform for chapter website development.

  2. Extending scholarship in the region. STTI has always been a leader in scholarship; however, this must reach the membership. The Henderson Library and Conferences (local to international) are venues for this. We want to continue our Region 8 Conferences in alternate years, with the 2012 Conference to be held in Tennessee. The conference supports networking in the region and gives opportunity to build scholarship of research, service-learning and international experiences.

  3. Becoming Intentionally Global. I am highly supportive of the STTI mission to be intentionally global. I strongly support the plan to add global regions and to have RCC from each region as that will develop global leaders and structure through collaboration. It is essential we remain active in developing international standards of nursing education and contribute to other activities that build global connections. I am a Virginia Henderson Fellow because I want to support nursing scholarship globally.

I have great enthusiasm for what people can do with a little guidance as to what is needed. As a representative of the international organization, I can bring that encouragement and recognition to chapters in their many stages of development. Thank you to Region 8 Chapters for your support over the last two years! I hope to continue to serve Region 8 on the RCCC for the next biennium!
