Mentoring Duration

The duration of mentoring activities will be based on the purpose and projected outcomes of the program itself.  It is important to consider how the structure (formality, format and interactions) and duration will impact mentors and mentees and their willingness or desire to participate.

Short-term
Short-term mentoring includes events, activities or a short period of time, typically 3 months or less

  • Pros:
    • Focuses on a very specific purpose
    • Reduces uncertainty about expectations and projected outcomes
    • Experiences a higher rate of completion
    • Provides a format that is easily tracked
  • Cons:
    • Narrows scope of potential participants if scope and purpose of program is too narrow
    • Decreases likelihood of developing long-lasting relationships between and among participants

Long-term
Long-term mentoring occurs over an extended period of time, typically 3 months or longer

  • Pros:
    • Develops stronger relationships between and among participants
    • Provides opportunity to personalize program and better meet participants' needs
    • Supports longevity of chapter membership by establishing connections among chapter members
  • Cons:
    • Requires more pre-planning, along with more time dedicated to developing and overseeing mentoring program
    • Decreases program completion rates if participants cannot commit to the entire length of the mentoring program
