STTI Global Region: Latin & South American/Caribbean

Name and Credentials:
Nelly Garzon, MSN

Regional Coordiantor Statement
I had RN nursing studies at the National University of Colombia. BSN and MSN at Catholic University of America, U.S.

My working experience covers services and tracking: as Head nurse and Chief Nurse at the  Social Security Health system, administration in higher education at the Ministry of Education, Planning of Human Resources in Health, Ministry of Health. I have had different  administrative and tracking positions at the National University of Colombia, nursing teaching at the undergraduate and graduate programmes and participation in various academic reforms.

My experiences in health administration, nursing teaching, research, and in different positions in national and tnternational nursing organizations, short-term consultant at Paho and OMS, visitor profesor,  lecturer in international conferences,  have permited me to know nursing leaders and nursing systems in different countries of the Region, that will help  me to work with diferent groups of nurses to introduce them to the history, organization, philosophy.

It will be a great help to me, if I am elected as Regional coordinator, the experience that I have had in the organization of the Upsilon Nu Chapter of  STTI, at the National University of Colombia. Now I have better understanding of the importance to have Spanish in STTI, as a  second language, to motivate the organization of STTI chapters in  universities of all or at least  in the majority of the countries of this región. Now, I have  also a bettter understanding of the main topics  and STTI programmes that are a priority matter of interest for Latin American nurses.

Now that I am retired I can dedicate more time to work in this important endeavour to improve scientific nursing knowledge and nursing leadership in the region.
