Start a Chapter with Other Institutions of Higher Education

Establishing a Sigma Theta Tau International chapter is a rewarding process and it allows an institution of higher education to provide the many benefits that come with being a member of the honor society, which include professional knowledge, leadership opportunities and career guidance.

It may be beneficial for you to choose to start a chapter with one or more other institutions of higher learning if your institution is in close proximity to another institution, or if your institution has a small student population. With this collaborative effort, you will apply to be an at-large chapter.

The basic process for developing a chapter with another school is:

  • Request information from Sigma Theta Tau International headquarters with intent to start an at-large chapter.
  • Establish interest and support to form a collaborative nursing honor society with the interested institution(s).
  • Form a steering committee to identify potential members from each school.
  • Host an informational meeting for potential members.
  • Invite candidates to apply.
  • Host induction ceremony and include an event or program that supports the purposes and goals of the honor society. This can be done collaboratively or separately.
  • Host another event or program that supports the purposes and goals of the honor society within one year of induction ceremony; collaboration is encouraged.
  • Apply to become an at-large chapter once the nursing honor societies combined have at least 50 total active members and sufficient funds to sustain a chapter.

The at-large chapter charter application process includes the following steps:

  • Submit application for an at-large chapter charter.*
  • House of Delegates votes either in person or electronically.*
  • Chartering ceremony occurs.

*The following step in the application process is dependent upon whether this step is approved.
