Start a Chapter at Your Institution of Higher Education
Establishing a Sigma Theta Tau International chapter is a rewarding process and it allows an institution of higher education to provide the many benefits that come with being a member of the honor society, which include professional knowledge, leadership opportunities and career guidance.
The basic process for developing a chapter at your institution of higher education is:
- Request the electronic chapter development process handbook from Sigma Theta Tau International headquarters (chapserv@stti.iupui.edu).
- Establish interest and gain support to form a nursing honor society.
- Form a steering committee to identify potential members.
- Host an informational meeting for potential members.
- Invite candidates to apply.
- Host induction ceremony and include an event or program that supports the purposes and goals of the society.
- Host another event or program that supports the purposes and goals of the society within one year of induction ceremony.
- Apply to become a chapter once your nursing honor society has at least 50 active members, sufficient funds to sustain a chapter and has charged renewal fees at least once.
- Charter or charter amendment applications may be requested by contacting chapserv@stti.iupui.edu or +1.317.634.8171.
The chapter charter application process includes the following steps:
- Submit application for chapter charter.*
- House of Delegates votes either in person or electronically.*
- Chartering ceremony occurs.
*This step in the application process is dependent upon whether this step is approved.
