CAM 101: Exploring Complementary and Alternative Therapies (8 contact hours) (Available through 30 November 2009) by Olga Felton, BSN, RN, HN-BC This course provides a philosophical perspective of CAM therapies, descriptions of the various therapies, precautions and practical applications. There is no doubt that conventional, or Western, medicine is useful for diagnosing, treating, and curing specific diseases. Conventional medicine as we know it, has historically been focused on combating disease with the use of medication and/or surgery. It has a prevalent role in the health of our society and serves an important function.
Complementary and alternative therapies are healing therapies that are used by many people to promote health and well being. They are collectively referred to as complementary and alternative medicine or CAM. Even though the word medicine is part of its description, many of the therapies do not involve medicine as we know it in the Western world. This course examines the benefits of CAM and how nurses can use these modalities to enhance health and well being.
