Global Standards for Initial Nursing and Midwifery Education
In May 2005,
The World
Health Organization convened a stakeholders’
meeting to discuss nursing and midwifery’s contribution
to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). During the course
of this meeting, ”developing global standards for initial
nursing and midwifery education” was established as a priority
activity for the achievement of MDGs in health.
As a response
to this priority, The World Health Organization (WHO) and Sigma
Theta Tau International (STTI) committed to the following three
part strategy that would result in the development of global standards
for initial nursing and midwifery education.
• Review
and compile existing education standards
• Convene nursing and midwifery education experts to define
global minimum standards
• Disseminate proposed standards through a diverse set of
stakeholders and organizations.
The data captured
here represents the collective thinking of participants attending
a stakeholders’ meeting held in Bangkok Thailand 6-8, December
2006. This meeting was the second phase of the three part strategy.
During the
course of two days, participants identified key themes/issues
that should be taken into account when formulating a set of global
standards for initial nursing and midwifery.
