Mission
The Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing supports the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, through active fundraising and conscientious stewardship.
helping nurses around the world heal
In 1936, Sigma Theta Tau International funded the first nursing research grant in United States history. Now STTI, in collaboration with local chapters and grant partners, contributes more than US $650,000 annually to nursing research through more than 250 grants, scholarships and monetary awards.
Thanks to donations to the Foundation's Research Permanent Fund, this past year the foundation alone provided funding for more than US $130,000 in small research grants. These funds are helping nurses such as Yolanda Havenga, Pretoria (South Africa) recipient of a 2007-08 Sigma Theta Tau International Small Research Grant Award.
helping nurses around the world lead
The Foundation supports honor society Leadership Institute programs such as the Leadership Academy, the Mentored Leadership Development and the Board Mentoring Program. Continued donor support helps members like Ms. Khairunnissa Salim Hooda of Karachi (Pakistan) who received a 2008 Edith Anderson Leadership Education Grant.
helping nurses around the world learn
Each year the Foundation provides leadership education grants to assist at least two nurses to attend honor society educational programs, including the international nursing research congress and the biennial convention. Thanks to donations to the Leadership Permanent Fund, eight grants to nurses from four countries, including Henry Guevara (USA) were able to attend the 20th International Nursing Research Congress. In addition, six nurses from six countries, including Panjwani Hasina Amin (Pakistan), received assistance to attend the 40th Biennial Convention this past November.
The Foundation also provides subsidies to deserving members to continue their honor society membership through the Edith Anderson Membership Subsidy Fund. During the 2009 fiscal year, more than US $3,000 in membership support was awarded to 49 members. In addition, US $8,967.50 was awarded to 95 members in the United States Gulf of Mexico region thanks to contributions to the Hurricane Relief Membership Fund.
The Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing is a separate legal entity from the honor society. It is established as a 501c(3) organization, making it tax exempt. Separating the foundation from the honor society maintains a degree of protection for the assets and is part of an overall risk-management program. link to top
