In 1936, Sigma Theta Tau International funded the first nursing research grant in United States history. Collectively with its chapters and grant partners, the honor society now contributes more than US $650,000 annually to nursing research through grants, scholarships and monetary awards. The honor society sponsors or cosponsors more than 250 research-oriented educational programs annually, including small research grants.

Last year, the foundation alone provided more than US $82,000 in research grants to honor society members. Despite these successes, qualified applications continue to be declined annually due to limited financial resources.

You can help nurses heal by supporting the scholarship of nursing, making more monies available each year for grants, scholarships and monetary awards.

The honor society’s Chiron Mentoring Program develops nurses as leaders by pairing nurses who are well-known for their leadership abilities with nurses who want to cultivate their skills. CareerMap puts nurses in charge of their own professional development. And the Omada Board Mentoring Program prepares nurses to serve on national and international boards. Through such efforts, the honor society has provided mentoring and professional development opportunities for more than 165,000 nurses globally during the past decade.

You can help nurses lead by contributing to the foundation’s leadership fund, which directly finances these and other leadership initiatives.

The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International strives to create a global community of nurses who lead in using scholarship, knowledge and technology to improve the health of the world's people. We continue to broaden the nursing knowledgebase through knowledge, development and dissemination. By doing this, we promote a healthier people.

The key to this, and the core of our organization, is education. Our electronic library, for example, provides nurses with a vehicle to share the outcomes of their research and technical papers. The honor society offers an evidence-based peer-reviewed journal providing prominent and authoritative information supporting clinical decisions and consumer choices in nursing care. And, via the honor society’s Web site, any nurse may participate in online continuing education courses. All are vehicles for knowledge to help nurses stay informed of the latest health care developments.

Honor society members benefit from the scholarly works of other members and continuing education programs. However, sometimes the cost of membership or attendance to events is prohibitive. For this reason, the foundation provides scholarships and grants to help members learn. Last year alone, the foundation provided more than US $3,900 to enable 68 members to continue learning through membership subsidies. Assistance up to US $400 is now available to help at least two applicants attend research congresses, biennial conventions, Chapter Leader Academy, and the Chiron Mentoring Program.

Your contributions guarantee that Sigma Theta Tau International will remain a leading proponent and catalyst for helping nurses learn.

foundation governance

The Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing is a separate legal entity from the honor society. It is established as a 501c(3) organization, making it tax exempt. Separating the foundation from the honor society maintains a degree of protection for the assets and is part of an overall risk-management program. link to top

The Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing supports the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, through active fundraising and conscientious stewardship. link to top
