Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy

The John A. Hartford Foundation

The John A. Hartford Foundation
Dedicated to Improving Health Care for Older Americans

Founded in 1929, the John A. Hartford Foundation is a committed champion of training, research and service system innovations that promote the health and independence of America’s older adults.  Through its grantmaking, the Foundation seeks to strengthen the nation’s capacity to provide effective, affordable care to this rapidly increasing older population by educating “aging-prepared” health professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers), and developing innovations that improve and better integrate health and supportive services. The Foundation was established by John A. Hartford. Mr. Hartford and his brother, George L. Hartford, both former chief executives of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, left the bulk of their estates to the Foundation upon their deaths in the 1950s.  Additional information about the Foundation and it programs is available at www.jhartfound.org.

The Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

The five original Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, funded since 2000, aim to advance academic geriatric nursing through education, research, practice and policy activities.

The John A. Hartford Foundation funded four new Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence in 2007 to prepare over 500 nursing faculty members with expertise in geriatrics. These new centers will work closely with the five existing Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. Click below to learn more about each Center of Excellence.

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, located at New York University, is a project of the John A. Hartford Foundation. Since 1996, the Institute has served as a national resource dedicated to providing the tools to embed within the nursing profession the knowledge and skills for caring for an increasing aging population.

Targeting both the individual nurse and hospital-based practice, the institute has created authoritative, evidence-based resources for nursing education, practice, research and policy.
