Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy

Presented by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International in partnership with the John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy

Older adults consume 50% of all hospital care, both as consumers of health care services and recipients of nursing care. Older adults also use more than 80% of home care services and occupy 90% of all nursing home beds in the United States. As a result, nurses are pivotal to the delivery of quality care to geriatric patients. Nurses’ roles and responsibilities place them in a unique position to manage, coordinate and facilitate decision-making in collaboration with other health care professionals in providing geriatric care. Yet, many nurses do not have the skills necessary to prepare them for the leadership role they are often thrust into early in their careers. The need for skills that prepare nurses in a variety of health care settings to assume leadership roles is critical to improving the quality of geriatric care.

Sigma Theta Tau International in collaboration with The John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence is developing the nationwide Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy. STTI and The Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence are currently in a one-year planning phase of the Academy. During this time, the members of the planning and faculty teams will develop curriculum, a national network of nurse leader mentors, and additional leadership and scholarly resources for geriatric nurses.

The purpose of the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy is to prepare and develop the leadership skills of nurses in leadership roles in their respective health care delivery settings to lead multidisciplinary teams that will improve the quality of health care to geriatric patients and their families. The Leadership Academy provides learning experiences that prepare and position the individual to influence patient and practice outcomes.
