Mentor or Mentee?
Mentor applicants are nurses who are currently serving on the board of directors of a national or international non-profit or for-profit organization and who have an interest in supporting the development of future generations of trustees. Mentor applicants must have the support of their board which serves in a co-mentoring role. Honor Society members and non-members are invited to apply to the Board Leadership Development Program. All members are required to have up-to-date payment of international and chapter dues.
Mentee applicants are nurses who are currently serving on a chapter, local, state and/or regional organization’s board of directors and who have an interest in governance.
Program Objectives
- Phase I
- June 2009 - February 2010
Objectives: At the conclusion of Phase I of the Board Leadership Development Program, participants (mentees) will:
- Understand the board of directors’ role in defining mission and vision and in strategic planning and fund raising;
- Understand the legal and regulatory responsibilities that shape the structure and process of decision making in non-profit organizations, and;
- Understand the duties, responsibilities, rights and relationships between the board, Chief Executive Officer, staff and volunteers where applicable.
- Phase II
- March 2010 - February 2011
Objectives: At the conclusion of Phase II of the Board Leadership Development Program, participants (mentees) will:
- Understand policy and planning trends in non-profit governance;
- Identify qualities and characteristics of effective, high performance governing boards;
- Increase knowledge, skills and abilities to evaluate effective organizational structures, group dynamics and decision making within boards of directors, and;
- Be familiar with reliable sources of information and continuing education on governance to support the lifelong learning related to board leadership development.

Program Activities
- Monthly reading assignments
- Weekly directed e-mail discussion of reading assignments and other governance issues
- Pairing with a national or international organization’s board of directors for a practicum experience and assignment to a mentor who is a member of the board
- Attendance at a minimum of two meetings of the mentor’s board of directors
- Attendance at Board Leadership Development Program, held in June of the first program year (mentees only)
Language
Honor Society members and non-members from all countries are encouraged to apply. Strong skills in written and spoken English are required.
Continuing Education
Up to 100 contact hours can be earned during the two-year program. The honor society is accredited to provide continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Financial Considerations
Each participant is responsible for securing financial support to cover all program expenses including transportation, lodging and meals associated with the Board Leadership Development Program and with attendance at board meetings. Recommended sources for financial assistance include honor society chapters, employers, civic organizations, community and professional organizations. The Foundation for Nursing provides two scholarships biannually to support participants in the Board Leadership Development Program. For information and eligibility for scholarships click here.
The fee for the program is US$875. Only mentees pay a program fee. The fee includes copies of all required reading materials, BLD Institute including materials and most meals and conference calls associated with program participation. BLD mentors receive complimentary copies of all required reading materials.
