Mentor or Mentee?

Mentor applicants are experienced professionals, whose experience and level of responsibility can directly contribute to supporting a mentee’s professional goals. Each mentor guides a mentee in designing and carrying out an individualized leadership development plan.

Mentee applicants can be at any stage in their professional career and desire skill development in new areas. During the one-year experience, each mentee prepares and carries out an individualized leadership development plan.

Mentor/Mentee Pairs

Applications are invited from participants who wish to be either a mentee or a mentor. Mentees are highly encouraged to choose a mentor they may already know. Mentors can be a co-worker, a member of their honor society chapter or another nurse from their region. Staff will assist applicants in their search for a mentor.

Applicants who wish to apply as a mentor are also encouraged to apply, but mentors must apply as part of a Mentor/Mentee pair.

Applicants with a prior mentoring relationship may apply to expand this relationship. However, a pre-existing relationship is not required in order to apply.

All pairs participate in group activities. Each pair also works together on the mentee’s individualized leadership development plan.

Who is eligible?

  • Membership Requirements. All nurses whether they are honor society members or not, are eligible to apply. Applications to participate in the program are invited from nurses with varied academic backgrounds and work experience.
  • Language: Members from all countries are encouraged to apply. Strong skills in written and spoken English are required.
  • Internet Access: Every participant must be computer-proficient and have, at minimum, Windows NT or XP Internet access throughout the program.

Group activities

  • Monthly Internet discussions
  • 3-day mentoring and leadership development institute
  • Special activities and recognition for those attending the honor society biennial convention

Individual activities

The mentee develops and carries out individualized leadership development plan with guidance from the mentor and International Leadership Institute staff support.

Continuing Education

Up to 50 contact hours can be earned during the year-long program. Sigma Theta Tau International is accredited to provide continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Dates and Locations

Except for the mentoring and leadership development institute and the biennial convention, all program activities take place in each pair’s home city. In situations where the mentor and mentee are not in geographic proximity, the program activities can be completed and communication can occur by e-mail, phone, fax and postal mail.

Mentee registration fees for the program are as follows:
Honor society active members: US $650
Non-members: US $750

Registration fees cover the monthly internet discussion, conference calls, 3-day mentoring leadership institute, all materials for the leadership institute, special recognition and activities for those attending the honor society's biennial convention. Registration also includes up to 50 contact hours.

Recommended sources for financial assistance include: employers, civic organizations, hospital auxiliaries, government agencies, community and professional foundations, professional organizations and honor society chapters. Scholarship funds may be available. Please view a scholarship opportunity from the honor society here.  For more information, call Lindsay Baker at 888.634.7575 toll free (US/Canada) or e-mail at lindsay@stti.iupui.edu.

Honor society members from outside the US may be entitled to discounted rates based on the World Bank classification categories. The fee for the middle category is US $260; the fee for the low category is US $130. Please view the country categories here.
