Nurses Claim the Corner Office
New book from STTI helps nurses develop as leaders, rise to the top
INDIANAPOLIS — When surveying more than 1,000 hospital boards, the American Hospital Association recently found that a mere 6 percent of board members were nurses.
Nurses have leadership experience in patient care, constituent building, resource management, critical decision making, and more, yet they are still being overlooked for executive roles in the health care industry. Now, in a new book — Claiming the Corner Office: Executive Leadership Lessons for Nurses — two executives offer guidance for those aspiring to obtain these executive roles.
In Claiming the Corner Office, published by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), authors Connie Curran, EdD, RN, FAAN, and Therese Fitzpatrick, PhD, RN, show nurses how to leverage their knowledge and expertise in patient care to achieve success as a senior executives, entrepreneurs, or governing board leaders.
Curran and Fitzpatrick focus on teaching nurses how to develop their personal leadership potential, highlighting those skills, competencies, and experiences required as nurses carve career strategies that lead to senior executive or entrepreneurial positions.
“The authors recognize the personal qualities that make a great nurse and provide a road map that uses them to obtain leadership success,” said Janice Gries, DNP, RNC, IBCLC, APN, president of JCG Healthcare LLC. “Their lessons are specific, concrete, and adaptable. An absolute must-read for graduate nursing students and experienced nurses wishing to develop their career path in leadership, this book recognizes the importance of having the right person in the corner office and supplies the tools to get there.”
