Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing launches Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership Development program with support from The Elsevier Foundation

New Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership Development program will address faculty shortage

IndianapolisSigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing has been awarded a US $200,000 grant by The Elsevier Foundation to support a new Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership Development (NFMLD) pilot program focused on retaining and building the next generation of nurse faculty. The program, which will be administered by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International’s (STTI) International Leadership Institute, will help alleviate the nurse faculty crisis by providing knowledge, skill development opportunities and support to retain new nurse educators who have transitioned into the role.

Early career nurse educators with an advanced degree will be professionally mentored for 18 months by established nurse faculty leaders (mentor/mentee pairs must be from different institutions). A separate group of expert nurse program faculty will design the NFMLD curriculum that will include:

  • A three-day, face-to-face workshop at STTI headquarters, utilizing experiential methods of teaching and learning;
  • Participation in online discussion forums with faculty;
  • Development of an individualized leadership progression plan;
  • Mentor/mentee collaboration to create an innovative educational project; and
  • Dissemination of project results through the world-renown Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library.

“We are extremely pleased to have support from The Elsevier Foundation for this new pilot program,” said STTI CEO Patricia E. Thompson, RN, EdD, FAAN. “The nurse faculty program is modeled after our highly successful International Leadership Institute programs and has great potential to impact the retention of nurse educators.”

Research shows that new faculty who have worked successfully with a mentor have higher job satisfaction, with increased promotions and mobility than those without mentors. They are also more productive in obtaining competitive grants, leading professional organizations and publishing in scholarly books and journals articles.

“The Elsevier Foundation understands the global nursing shortage can’t be successfully addressed without of building and retaining the next generation of nurse faculty,” said David Ruth, Executive Director for the Elsevier Foundation. “Transitioning from nursing practice into a faculty role isn’t easy, so we hope our joint effort with STTI to expand mentoring programs can go a long way to help new nurse faculty succeed.”
