Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in the Member-Get-a-Member Campaign?

Any “active” member may participate in the campaign and is eligible to win prizes. To have a member status of “active,” a member must be up-to-date on his/her membership fee payments.

How do I know if my friend or colleague is already a member?

Before referring friends for membership, you may want to ask them if they have already been inducted into the honor society. You can also access the online membership directory to see if the individuals are listed. If they are not members, an invitation to apply should be extended provided they meet the required membership criteria

What if the person has been inducted into the honor society but is not currently a member?

Upon induction a member is considered a life-long member. However, members are only considered “active” if they have continued to pay their annual membership fees. If your friend or colleague has been inducted, but is currently not an “active” member, he/she does not need to re-apply. Instead, encourage him/her to renew or reactivate his/her membership by contacting headquarters or renewing online.

Although I did not recruit or refer a member, I did get someone to renew or reinstate his/her membership. Does this count toward prizes?

Not at this time. We hope to launch a renewal campaign at a later date; however, until then only the referral and recruitment of new nurse leader members will count toward prizes. We always appreciate members encouraging other members to remain active in the honor society and thank you for your efforts.

How do I know if my friend or colleague meets the membership criteria?

All nurse leader candidates must meet the following criteria: hold a baccalaureate degree or equivalent in any field; be legally recognized to practice nursing in his/her country; and must also have demonstrated achievement in nursing.

Do the Member-Get-a-Member and Chapter-Get-a-Member campaigns overlap?

The Member-Get-a-Member and the Chapter-Get-a-Member campaigns run simultaneously. If a member recruits a nurse leader and that individual is inducted, the inducting chapter may also count that nurse leader in their total chapter count toward the prize drawing. The member who initiated contact with the nurse leader will also receive credit for the referral and be eligible for prizes. In fact, chapters are encouraged to get their members involved in the campaign.

My chapter is not participating in the campaign; am I still eligible to participate?

Yes. Your chapter does not need to participate in the Chapter-Get-a-Member Campaign in order for you to participate in the Member-Get-a-Member Campaign.

I am a chapter leader; can I still participate in the Member-Get-a-Member campaign?

Yes. Just like all other members of the chapter, chapter leaders may participate in the Member-Get-a-Member campaign and receive credit for referrals they have made.

Our chapter has never inducted 10 Nurse Leaders within the same year. How do we get started in the Chapter-Get-a-Member Campaign?

The community in which your chapter is located may have nurses who did not have the opportunity to previously join the honor society. Start within the institution of higher learner where your chapter is located. Are the faculty, associate deans and dean members of the honor society? Partner with a local hospital and hold an orientation session, or place a chapter information table in a visible location inviting staff nurses to pick up membership information.

Get your members involved. Ask them to seek out their friends and colleagues who exemplify nursing excellence and extend the invitation to join. By participating, the individual members are also eligible for Member-Get-a-Member prizes.

What happens if my referred friend or colleague does not get inducted by a chapter?

All referrals will result in the member being eligible for the quarterly prize drawings (for the quarter in which the referral was made). However, members will only be entered into the year-end grand prize drawing for referrals that resulted in inductions. If an application for membership is denied, the nurse leader can not be inducted.

Who will review the applications submitted through this campaign?

All nurse leader applications are reviewed in one of two ways. The nurse leader application asks the candidates to specify a chapter of choice. When an application is received by headquarters, the application is forwarded to the chapter indicated on the application. The chapter then has 30 days to vote on the candidate. If the chapter is non-responsive, or if the chapter prefers, the application is sent to the International Review Team. The team consists of five honor society members and chapter leaders.

I referred a friend or colleague before the campaign ended, but he/she still have not been inducted. Am I still eligible for prizes?

You are eligible for the quarterly referral prize drawing (for the quarter in which the referral was made), but will not be eligible for the year-end grand prize drawing until the member is inducted. It is possible that the two could occur in two separate campaign years if the candidate is waiting to be inducted at an upcoming induction ceremony.

What happens if the individual that I referred does not wish to complete the application?

You will still receive credit for the referral and be entered into the quarterly prize drawing (for the quarter in which the referral was made). However, only members whose candidate complete the application process and are inducted will be eligible for the year-end grand prize drawing.

Does this campaign uphold the honor society’s high standards for membership?

Yes. Chapter leaders and the International Review Team carefully review nurse leader applications to ensure that the candidates demonstrate achievement and exemplify excellence in nursing.

Are individuals outside of the United States eligible to apply for membership?

Yes. Any nurse world-wide may apply for honor society membership given they meet the membership criteria. He/she must be legally recognized to practice nursing in his/her country, have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent in any field and have demonstrate achievement in nursing.
