Volunteer Connect

A variety of meaningful service opportunities exist for honor society members to use their diverse skills, experience and knowledge. Whether your interest is in writing, curriculum development, leadership, clinical expertise, strategic planning, mentoring, speaking or fund raising, we will help you find a fulfilling volunteer position to meet your needs.

Sigma Theta Tau International Board of Directors – responsible for goal-setting, planning, policy development, resource development, corporate oversight, evaluation and decision-making for the honor society on behalf of the membership

STANDING COMMITTEES
Governance Committee – oversees bylaws compliance, makes recommendations for bylaws changes, and oversees member and chapter eligibility issues

Leadership Succession – develops members in organizational leadership roles across the span of their careers, mentors members to assume organizational board and officer positions at all levels of the organization, and selects nominees and prepares biennial ballot

Regional Chapters Coordinating Committee (RCCC) – provides leadership that establishes and maintains networks for communication and sharing among chapters, regional committee members and members of other international committees; develops a vision and leads honor society initiatives to support and maintain the vitality of chapters

ADVISORY COUNCILS
Advisory councils inform the board of current and future issues, directions and priorities of the honor society.

Futures Advisory Council – provides advice, informed opinion and recommendations as appropriate on current and future issues for use by the board in its direction setting, stakeholder analysis, policy setting and governance evaluation work

International Leadership Institute Advisory Council – advises the board of directors about honor society-wide leadership priorities

Research/Scholarship Advisory Council – provides advice, informed opinion and recommendations as appropriate on current and future issues for use by the board of directors in its direction setting, stakeholder analysis, policy setting and governance evaluation work

BOARD-APPOINTED TASK FORCES
Board-appointed task forces are special work groups formed by the board of directors to complete an assigned task within a specified time frame. Board-appointed task forces are made up of members who bring expertise, interest and commitment to complete an assigned task.

Community Building Implementation Task Force – examines the issue of scholarship of reflective practice and creates principles, practices and resources that advance reflective practice

GENERAL TASK FORCES
Task forces are special work groups formed by standing committees, board advisory councils and staff to complete an assigned task within a specified time frame. Task forces are made up of members who bring expertise, interest and commitment to complete an assigned task.

Chapter Key Award Task Force – collaborates with peers to develop outcome-based criteria for measuring chapter excellence

Charter/Charter Amendment Application Review Task Force – reviews charter and charter amendment applications, shares or enhances knowledge of governance issues

Collateral Reviewer Task Force – reviews collateral reviewer applications and feedback and makes recommendations on the Collateral Reviewer program

Education Task Force – sets the overall biennial education goals for the honor society and overall objectives for convention, generates ideas for keynote speakers and special invited sessions for convention

Volunteer Task Force – shares expertise as volunteers and volunteer leaders in developing a comprehensive volunteer program, VolunteerConnect, implementing volunteer initiatives and providing feedback on how to increase member involvement

SUBSIDIARY BOARDS OF DIRECTORS

Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing Board of Directors – supports the honor society through active fund raising and conscientious stewardship–governance and fund raising are the focus of board activities

International Honor Society of Nursing Building Corporation Board of Directors – holds title to real and personal property for the benefit of Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc.

Nursing Knowledge International™ Board of Directors – serves the global community of nursing by providing knowledge and professional development services that increase nurse satisfaction and enhance nurse effectiveness and ultimately patient care

International Academic Nursing Alliance (IANA) – is a global electronic community of academicians in nursing united by common professional ideals and goals and a culture of caring, committed to scholarly learning and sharing

INTERNATIONAL-LEVEL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Ambassador – helps increase the honor society’s visibility and membership base by educating nurses abroad about the honor society and nursing and, when applicable, encouraging membership and promoting chapter development

Archival Resource Consultant – helps chapters develop, maintain and use their archival collections

Awards Judge – serves on a committee of up to three judges to review assigned international or regional award submissions and select winning entry by popular vote

Book Proposal Reviewer – evaluates book proposals to determine suitability for publication by the honor society–in keeping with usual book publishing practices, the identity of the author/editor will be disclosed to reviewers, but the reviewers’ identities will not be known to the author/editor

Career Advisor – responds to telephone or e-mail inquiries for advice and support on questions regarding nursing as a career

Case Study Reviewer – reviews case studies for online continuing education programs using specific criteria to evaluate the study and provide recommendations to the author regarding its content

Chiron Mentor – provides support for leadership development in nursing by working with a mentee in designing and carrying out his/her individualized leadership development plan

Chiron Mentee – develops leadership skills by participating in group activities and working with a mentor to carry out an individualized leadership development plan

Collateral Reviewer – assists the honor society by reviewing submissions for the International Nursing Research Congress, International Evidence-Based Nursing Preconference, Biennial Convention and Small Grants program

Continuing Education Author – creates educational activities for online continuing education

Continuing Education Beta Tester – completes and evaluates a case study from a learner perspective to assure the design meets established standards and criteria

Convention Planning Workgroup – advises regarding call for abstracts and review criteria, provides volunteer orientation assistance onsite at the convention and advises on program content

Journal of Nursing Scholarship Reviewer – reviews manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Nursing Scholarship (JNS)

Media Expert – serves as an expert contact for media in various health care areas

Omada Mentor – helps prepare nurses to serve on national and international boards

Omada Mentee – gains skills to become valuable and contributing members of boards at any level and with any type of organization

Reflections on Nursing Leadership Author – assists the honor society in communicating nurses’ contributions and relevance to the health of people worldwide

Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing Reviewer – reviews manuscripts submitted to Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, a quarterly, peer-reviewed, evidence-based nursing journal

REGIONAL-LEVEL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Regional Chapters Coordinating Committee (RCCC) – provides leadership that establishes and maintains networks for communication and sharing among chapters, regional committee members and members of other international committees; develops a vision and leads honor society initiatives to support and maintain the vitality of chapters

Regional Chapters Coordinating Committee Chair – provides leadership to enhance and advance the development of chapters in fulfilling the purpose of the honor society, serves as a resource for the regional chapters coordinators

Regional Committee Member – works with regional coordinator to meet the needs and priorities of the region, in areas that could include but are not limited to awards/recognition, communication, mentoring, member involvement and programs

CHAPTER-LEVEL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Chapter Officer – leads and coordinates local operations including induction, governance, programming, finance and scholarship activities

Chapter Committee – prepares, reviews and makes recommendations regarding policies corresponding to its area of responsibility for board of directors’ approval

Task Force – completes a task assigned by the chapter board and committees within a specified time frame

Event Volunteer – assists with chapter events such as Memory Walk, induction, programs and fund raising.
