Laurie Nagelsmith

Laurie Nagelsmith, PhD, RN, CNE

Dr. Laurie Nagelsmith is thrilled to be part of the STTI’s Board of Directors. In the role of secretary, she has pledged to foster clarity and understanding among members and partners, while staying focused on STTI’s goals and working diplomatically toward a shared vision. She has been a member of STTI since 1989 and is a charter member of Tau Kappa Chapter, North American Region 14. At the chapter level she has served in a variety of leadership roles including vice president, president-elect, and president and is the recipient of the chapter’s recognition and research awards.

She has worked in nursing education for the past 15 years and is currently the Associate Dean for Nursing at the State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, New York where she provides leadership and coordination of the College’s nursing degree programs. Prior to joining SUNY Empire State College she was the Associate Dean for Regulatory and Governmental Affairs at Excelsior College.

She earned a PhD in educational psychology and methodology from the SUNY University at Albany, a MS degree in nursing from The Sage Colleges, a BS degree in nursing from the SUNY College of Technology, and a diploma in nursing from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. In addition, she holds certification as a nurse educator from the National League for Nursing.

Dr. Nagelsmith’s areas of expertise are competency-based education, clinical performance assessment, public policy and the regulation of nursing education, and community health nursing. Her research has focused on adults in nontraditional learning environments and assessment and measurement of clinical competence.

During her over 25 year career in nursing she has worked in a variety of clinical practice roles including staff nurse, community health improvement coordinator, director of a college health service, homecare nurse, and wound ostomy and continence consultant.
