Nancy C. Sharts-Hopko, PhD, RN, FAAN
Nancy C. Sharts-Hopko has been a member of the faculty of the Villanova University College of Nursing for over 25 years. With a background in women’s and infant’s health, she has taught at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs, most recently developing and directing the PhD program since 2003. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Sharts-Hopko practiced in the neonatal intensive care unit at New York Hospital – Cornell University College of Medicine, and she taught in the City University of New York at Lehman College and the University of Delaware. In 1983,she served as a short-term WHO consultant in Bangladesh, working with the University of Dacca and with nursing service education directors at the medical centers in Chittagong and Mymensingh on community-based primary care outreach. From 1984 to1986,she taught as an Overseas Associate of the Presbyterian Church (USA) teaching at St. Luke’s College of Nursing in Tokyo. From 1987 to 1995, she was an officer in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserves.
Dr. Sharts-Hopko earned her academic degrees at Indiana University (BSN 1976) and New York University (MA 1978, PhD 1983). Her research has focused on women’s health perceptions during health and life transitions such as menopause, hysterectomy, birth in an international context, HIV and disability. In recent years, her research has focused on factors associated with visual disability among adult women.
She has published over 140 peer-reviewed research and clinical manuscripts, chapters, monographs, and books. She serves as an editorial board member or reviewer for 13 journals, and reviews grants for NIH, HRSA, as well as Sigma Theta Tau International and other entities. Dr. Sharts-Hopko has served terms on two U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committees and continues as a consultant to that agency. Other current or recent professional service commitments include the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association Investment Committee and Continuing Education Commission and the National League for Nursing Commission on Certification.
Dr. Sharts-Hopko has served in all chapter-level offices and committee chair positions that she encountered as she actively participated in Alpha, Upsilon, Delta Zeta, Beta Xi, and finally, Alpha Nu Chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International from 1975 to the present. She chaired President Vaugn Robel’s Committee on International Chapter Development, and President Wykle’s Finance Committee. She has served as the Communication Coordinator for (formerly) Region 6; she was Treasurer, Sigma Theta Tau International from 2003 to 2007; and Treasurer of the STTI Foundation Board 2007 to 2011. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 1990.
