Dorette “Dee” Sugg Welk, PhD, MSN, RN
Dorette “Dee” Sugg Welk is Faculty Emeritus at Bloomsburg University (BU), Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and a Zeta Theta Chapter member. She earned her BSN from D’Youville College, Buffalo, N.Y., her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania, and her PhD from Penn State. She taught in the BSN and MSN programs in the areas of Adult Health and served as Assistant Dean, Department of Nursing Chairperson, and Director of the Teaching And Learning Enhancement Center during her 27-year tenure. She teaches part-time for the University of Phoenix Online in the graduate program and at St. Augustine University, FL, in the Doctorate of Health Sciences Education program, with an emphasis on curriculum development. Her clinical background includes general medical-surgical nursing and critical care. She has received research grants, published throughout her career, and received an Outstanding Teaching Award from the Penn State, College of Education Alumni.
Dr. Welk has board experiences in community and university settings. She served a 4-year term as President of the Association of Pennsylvania State and University Retired Faculty, BU Chapter. She serves as a consultant in nursing education and scholarship, responding to community education for nurses in development and presentation of topics. She developed and teaches a 4-day workshop in various sites in central Pennsylvania called “Fit 4 Health” through CareerLinks© which prepares and socializes individuals for entry-level health care positions.
A member since 1974, Dr. Welk has served STTI in many capacities. She was instrumental in the development of the Theta Zeta Chapter and served as President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary, Delegate, and Publicity Chairperson, including providing the leadership to achieve the chapter’s first Key Award.
Dr. Welk serves on the Building Corporation as BOD Liaison and on the International Awards Committee. Regionally, she was Chair of the RCCC Speaker’s Bureau and a member of the Showcase of Regional Excellence Committee. She served as Region 11 Coordinator 2009-2011 with responsibility for 31 chapters in NY and PA. She is on the STTI Board of Directors as Chair of the Regional Chapter Coordinating Committee. In this capacity, she leads and facilitates the work of 20 Regional Coordinators (RCs) throughout the world as they support more than 480 chapters. With recent formalization of the Chapter Health process, Dr. Welk assists the RCs to promote compliance with the bylaws and therefore to better align with Vision 2020 and the Presidential Call-to-Action. The expansion of RC positions into five new global areas furthers the Society’s strategic directions. Dr. Welk’s leadership and management expertise in an electronic medium is well suited for implementing the STTI plan, including to:
- Continue to refine the procedures to promote chapter health
- Serve as a strategic resource for chapter leaders
- Work with chapters to showcase exemplars of regional excellence consistent with Vision 2020 and the Presidential Call-to-Action
- Develop resources to support traditional chapters in expanding their use of virtual applications
- Work with chapter leaders to highlight nursing activities related to the Millennium Development Goals
- Promote chapter/member use and participation in The Circle and Sharecare
