Susan Hickman, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Indiana University School of Nursing and a Senior Affiliate Faculty Member in the IU Health Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics. She is also a Co-Director of the RESPECT (Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training) Center at IUPUI and a Co-Chair of the Indiana Patient Preferences Coalition. Dr. Hickman received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College and doctorate in psychology from the University of Kansas. She is fellowship training in Geropsychology and has a postgraduate certificate in clinical ethics from the University of Washington. Dr. Hickman’s research focuses on improving end-of-life care for older adults by ensuring treatment preferences are honored. Her research includes several studies on the use the POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) Program, which is designed to document patient treatment preferences in the form of immediately actionable medical orders. Development Institutes Steering Committee, and is President of the Washington Estates Homeowners Association.
