Mastering Precepting Earns
Two American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards
STTI only publisher to win in multiple categories

INDIANAPOLIS — A book that offers real help to nurse preceptors — whether a novice or a veteran — has been recognized with two American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year awards.
Mastering Precepting: A Nurse’s Handbook for Success by Beth Tamplet Ulrich, EdD, RN, FACHE, FAAN, is the only book to win in two categories this year. The book, published by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), earned first place in the medical-surgical nursing category and second place in the nursing education category.

“Nursing has evolved into a profession that has a distinct body of knowledge, a social contract, and an ethical code. A good preceptor can set the foundation for a thriving career in his or her students, while a poor one can have devastating outcomes not only for the nurses trying to learn, but for the patients as well,” Ulrich says.

Mastering Precepting looks at communication, coaching, technology, self-care, learning styles, behaviors, and motivation. Its theories, research findings, and real-world advice apply to new graduates as well as long-time nurses transitioning into the preceptor role.

The AJN Book of the Year awards are regarded by nurses as the most important designation of excellence in book publishing. The AJN is the oldest and one of the most honored nursing journals in the world.

STTI was the only publisher with a book that won in multiple categories. Overall, STTI has won nine AJN Book of the Year awards: one in 2007, one in 2009, four in 2010, one in 2011, and these two most recent awards.
