Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy is accepting applicants for 2014-2015
Deadline is 28 February for this premier nurse mentoring program, conducted in partnership with the John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence
and funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation
INDIANAPOLIS—The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) is accepting applications through 28 February for its Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy. The 2014-2015 Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy is made possible by a grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and additional support from Hill-Rom. STTI’s International Leadership Institute administers the academy mentoring program.
Through a partnership between STTI and the John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (Hartford Centers), the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA) has become the premier leadership development opportunity for nurses dedicated to improving geriatric health outcomes and influencing policy related to the care of older adults.
Adults age 65 and over consume almost 50 percent of all hospital care, 90 percent of nursing home care, and 70 percent of home health care visits, both as consumers of health care services and recipients of nursing care. By 2030, older adults are expected to make up 19 percent of the population, as compared to 13 percent of the population as of 2009. Since 2008, the GNLA has been preparing a cadre of geriatric nursing leaders who are improving health outcomes for older adults in a variety of health care settings across the United States.
Since its inception in 2008, the GNLA has achieved important nursing outcomes in 24 states in the U.S. STTI conservatively estimates that the 38 GNLA Fellows who completed the first three cohorts annually impact 11,856 patients; 5,892 RNs; 1,004 LPNs/VNs; 1,628 direct-care workers; 440 nursing students; 6,999 inter-professional colleagues; and 596 inter-professional students. Senior leaders report significant organizational results in a number of areas, including reduced use of psychotropic drugs and reduced re-hospitalizations, reduced staff turnover, increased retention and patient satisfaction, and improved staff professionalism.
The Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy is a prestigious, highly selective 18-month leadership development experience created for high-potential master’s degree-level nurses and experienced mentors. Ideal GNLA applicants are successful mid-career nurses in leadership positions who are influencing care to older adults in health care or community settings. Each Fellow/Leadership Mentor pair is then supported by faculty members from the Hartford Centers.
“Given the rise in the Aging population, we realize that geriatric nursing is an area of significantly increasing need. Through Sigma Theta Tau International and the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy we are confident that we can help prepare nurses to provide exceptional care for our elders, now and in the future” said Hearst Foundations Executive Director Paul “Dino” Dinovitz.
“As a global organization that brings together top-performing nurses in all disciplines of the profession, STTI has a vested interest in meeting the needs of our changing world, and we are particularly dedicated to providing care to underserved or vulnerable populations,” said STTI President Hester C. Klopper, PhD, MBA, RN, RM, FANSA. “Fellows in the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy transform in powerful ways during their academy experience. It is rewarding to consider the system-level, meaningful impact they will have throughout their careers.”
For 90 years, STTI has honored the best and brightest women and men in nursing. The society provides nurses with programs, resources, and opportunities such as those offered through the International Leadership Institute, including the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy.
Prospective GNLA Fellow/Leadership Mentor pairs may submit applications for the new Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy cohort through 28 February 2014. The 2014-2015 cohort will begin in the second quarter of 2014. Comprehensive program details are available at www.nursingsociety.org/LeadershipInstitute/GeriatricAcademy
