Developing Honor Society Organizational Structure

Members are the foundation of each honor society and chapter. Officers are responsible for establishing and maintaining member satisfaction and the health of the honor society. To do this the board of directors has the responsibility to manage the honor society.

Required Positions
Per honor society bylaws, the board of directors is comprised of at least five elected officer positions led by the president. Other required board members include vice president, counselor, treasurer and secretary. Position descriptions are below.

  • At-large chapters may have a vice president representing each school
  • At-large chapters must have a counselor representing each school
  • Each chapter can vote a president-elect into office if they would like

Required Standing Committees
The bylaws require that each developing honor society have two standing committees:
Governance Committee and Leadership Succession Committee.

Optional Leadership Positions
To effectively and efficiently conduct honor society business and strategically plan for the future, developing honor societies may choose to elect or appoint additional leaders or convene work groups such as additional committees, advisory councils and task forces.

(Please note: To keep from becoming overwhelmed, most developing honor societies choose to add 1-2 optional positions to their board per year as they grow, learn about operations, and develop the honor society goals/ strategic plan. Only the required positions are required to be in place at the time of application for chapter status.)

Advisory councils inform the board of current and future issues, directions and priorities of the chapter (see Article IX, Section 5 of the honor society bylaws template). Members are appointed to the advisory council and serve terms that last through the close of the biennium, unless otherwise stated. The reporting structure of the advisory council is at the discretion of the honor society board of directors, who will decide whether the advisory council is accountable to a member of the board of directors or whether the chair of the advisory council sits directly on the board.

Task forces are formed to complete an assigned task within a specified time frame. Members are appointed by the board of directors and their terms are determined by the group to whom the task force reports.
