Fostering Healthy Work Environments: Building Trust, High Performing Teams, and a Conflict-Capable Workforce (Part: I)

Abstract Summary:
Fostering healthy work environments is imperative for all nurses in all settings. Nurses are ethically obligated to promote positive work environments by cultivating interpersonal and organizational trust, improving communication, and building high-performing, conflict-capable teams. This interactive session highlights elements of a healthy work environment, provides attendees the opportunity to assess their workplace health and civility acumen, and describes a variety of evidence-based strategies to build trust, promote teamwork, and effectively address conflicted situations.

Biography:
Dr. Cynthia Clark is Professor Emeritus, Strategic Nursing Adviser for ATI Nursing Education, and the Founder of Civility Matters. Her ground-breaking work on fostering civility has brought national and international attention to the controversial issues of incivility in academic and practice environments. Her theory-driven interventions, empirical measurements, theoretical models, and reflective assessments provide “best practices” to prevent, measure, and address uncivil behavior and to create healthy workplaces.

The Art and Science of Marketing Yourself

Abstract Summary:
As a new or seasoned nursing professional, marketing oneself is often a daunting undertaking. From preparing a resume or CV to developing and maintaining a portfolio, to preparing for an interview of various types, marketing yourself is both an art and a science. This presentation will provide you with specific guidance and tips to creating a masterful resume/CV. Preparing for an interview in today's diverse marketplace will be detailed, with specific recommendations for success.

Biography:
Dr. Lois Marshall has been a nurse educator for 36 years. She spent 26 years in full-time academics. She is currently a full-time nurse education consultant. She is the career center coordinator for both NSNA and STTI. She promotes the advancement of research/evidence-based practice nationally/internationally and is an expert on abstract/small grant writing. She is the author of Take Charge of Your Nursing Career (STTI, 2010), a reference book for nurses across all stages.

Cognitive Rehearsal and Scripting: Strategies to Address Workplace Incivility and Conflicted Encounters (Part II)

Abstract Summary:
The capacity to successfully manage conflict is imperative for all nurses, especially because the delivery of safe patient care depends on the ability to implement these vital skills. This interactive session describes several common conflicts that exist in healthcare and provides the participants with an opportunity to apply a variety of evidence-based models for framing conflicted conversations and to learn and practice specific ‘scripts’ to address conflict in a variety of situations.
