Author Cynthia Clark provides framework for creating positive learning environments for nurses

Updated STTI book helps nurse leaders maintain civility in nursing education

INDIANAPOLIS — The American Nursing Association has acknowledged that incivility, bullying, and violence are prevalent in nursing, but what does a nurse do who is experiencing these issues? In her new book, Creating and Sustaining Civility in Nursing Education, Second Edition, published by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Cynthia Clark, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, suggests a systemic change in how nurse leaders approach civility, starting in the classroom.

Clark, the founder of Civility Matters™, offers solutions, including role-modeling, mentoring, stress management, and positive learning environments in the comprehensive new edition of her book. She further explores the costs and consequences of incivility, its link to stress, ways to identify the problem, and how to craft a vision for change – including bridging the gap between nursing education and practice.

“I am highly committed to creating and sustaining communities of civility and positive work environments — helping others learn and practice skills to speak up, advocate, and support the need for respectful interactions to foster high-performing teams and organizations — and most important, to protect patient safety,” said Clark.
